Leave it to the Corvids

So you know how Crows have always been seen as the 'hardcore' birds? With their dark, mysterious, and eerie presence. Magpies too, kind of. Well this'll just make you love them more.

A couple species residing in Europe are rebelling against their human neighbors. Everyone knows about bird spikes, right? The strips you put up in order to keep birds from landing places, making nests, etc.? Well the Carrion Crows, and the Eurasian Magpies are stealing and repurposing the spikes as materials to use for their nests. Hardcore, right! Using something meant to deter them and keep them away as something to raise their young.

The two species use the spikes in slightly different ways. The Crow uses them as a base for structural purposes with the points facing inwards, where a softer cup would sit on top for laying the eggs. The Magpie however, seemed to be using the spikes to not only build the nests, but also as a defense mechanism to ward off other predatory birds and species. They usually use natural materials such as small branches and twigs to construct a dome shape nest, but these Magpies are using the spikes to complete the dome with the spike facing outwards in various directions.

Comment below on what you think about these birds. It's certainly made me love them more!
