Jaguar Reintroduction to the Amazon

Due to the wonderful conservation efforts of the Onçafari organization, the first male Jaguar is set to be released into the Amazonian rainforest in 2024! In 2022, an orphaned Jaguar cub was found in a weak and malnourished state, and was taken in to the Federal University of Mato Grosso's vet hospital. Luckily, the people who found him were environmental authorities, otherwise Xama would've had the same future as many other cubs his age and ended up at a zoo.

The model that the conservation group is using for reintroducing Jaguars is now being introduced to Argentina, and Mexico.

Their reintroduction model started by chance when they found a mother and two cubs resting in a treetop, and firefighters and authorities were called to try and sedate them to likely have them moved. Unfortunately, the mother passed away when she fell, so the organization took the cubs in and rehabilitated them. The two sisters became the first Jaguars to be rereleased into the wild freely. The project was considered successful when the two sisters had cubs of their own, and their cubs grew up and had their own cubs.

Currently, Xama is a year old, and his tests are showing that he is healthy, and should they continue to show the same results and his caretakers think that he is able to survive on his own, he'll be released next year when he is 2 years old. He was found near the area that is considered to be the Amazon, so he'll be returning to that environment. The area that he'll be in is twice the size of the Pantanal, so even with cameras it'll be hard for the team to see Xama since the forest is so dense. The tracking collar that he'll be released with has a set amount of time that it'll work for, and then once that time runs out it'll unlock and fall off the Jaguar. So they won't have to track him down and tranquilize him, and put him under stress.
